Belkyra Treatment London

Belkyra treatment is available in London through award-winning consultant plastic and cosmetic surgeon Paul Banwell.

Belkyra, as you may know, is a wonderful treatment for those who are concerned about the appearance of a double chin.

The process is minimally invasive and yet produces long-term, profound change; all this from a treatment that has full FDA approval.

In this page, we will outline key details relating to Belkyra, answer the common questions and also talk a little about Paul Banwell, one of a small number of London practitioners who are able to administer this superb treatment option.

What is Belkyra Treatment

Belkyra is an injectable treatment that causes the rapid destruction of fat cells in the targeted area – this being the double chin – or submental fat.

The injections build upon the body’s natural processes, using a synthetic formulation of deoxycholic acid to break down the fat cells. Deoxycholic acid occurs naturally in the body, specifically to aid in the destruction of dietary fat, as such it is using a process the body already undertakes, just in a different area to address double chin fat.

The formulation targets fat cells, leaving all other cells untouched and undamaged. The fat is destroyed and dispelled naturally over the coming weeks.

The process itself is quick and virtually pain-free – the injections causing at most mild discomfort. A localised numbing agent can be used. A patient will often need just 15 to 20 minutes at Paul Barnwell’s London clinic to undergo treatment.

It is usual to have a number of treatments to ensure optimal results, often this is between two and four treatments, these spread out roughly a month apart. Opting for a number of smaller treatments ensures the results are as desired and monitored closely.

Benefits of Belkyra

Belkyra is a truly wonderful treatment, it produces profound change but in a way that is minimally invasive.

The results are permanent, the fat cells destroyed and gone for good.

An obvious benefit is to appearance. A double chin, or submental fat, is not a feature we would choose to have and so a process that removes it makes a welcome physical change.

However, the benefits extend far beyond this. We all naturally like to look our best and elements of appearance with which we are unhappy can have a profound impact on our confidence and self-esteem.

Once the problem is rectified, it is possible that mental health is improved, this impacting on work, relationships and all aspects of life.

A further benefit is that it can boost motivation to have a procedure such as Belkyra. However hard we exercise, however good our diet, it is common for areas of localised fat to remain, and the chin is one such area. It can be demotivating to exercise and eat well and yet see no improvement.

Belkyra addresses this, it creates the change you seek and provides the motivation to then stay in shape.

Unlike full invasive surgery, there is no downtime to speak of, no need for time off work or putting activities on hold.

Instead, you can have a treatment, go about the rest of your day, and the fat will be expelled without issue over the coming weeks.

Suitability for Belkyra

Belkyra can only be administered by medical professionals who have specific accreditation, and a full, detailed consultation would always be held first.

This ensures that Belkyra will only ever be considered as a treatment where it is sure to be suitable.

Broadly speaking, it is likely to be suitable if you have a double chin, or fat in this area that you would like treated and are in overall good health. It is worth noting that in common with other options for treating localised pockets of fat (such as LIPOCel, Aqualyx and fat freezing) this is not a treatment for overall weight loss.

Belkyra has full FDA approval and is considered safe, with any side effects typically extremely mild.

Belkyra Side Effects

As with any treatment, there are some side effects, but these are typically extremely mild and do not impact activities.

The most common mild side effects are:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Redness
  • Hardness around the treatment area.
  • Less common side effects include
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Nerve injury to the marginal mandibular nerve that can cause an uneven smile.

It is worth noting that these rare side effects resolve within a month in most instances.

The safety of Belkyra is demonstrated by the fact it has been the focus of a global clinical development program, involving more than 20 clinical trials and 2,600 patients globally.

I went to see Mr Banwell to get reassurance about the moles and blemishes which have been steadily growing since I was a young adult. 30 years ago we were not aware of the dangers of the sun and burning on holiday way an annual ritual. Thankfully we are all now aware that the sun damage can cause skin cancer and the changes in my moles mean I have a precautionary approach, particularly as older family members have had tumours removed. Paul knows exactly what he was looking for and studied each and every mole methodically. The two he highlighted for treatment were two of the least innocuous (in my opinion) which surprised me. Clearly to the trained eye they needed removal. I have since had an excision of one and due to have photo dynamic therapy treatment for the small red mark on my nose later this year. Without seeing Paul, this minor irritation would have been left and could possibly have created problems later in life. I advocate regular checks for anyone with moles and skin blemishes. The technology now is so impressive and it makes absolutely sense to take full advantage of Paul’s expertise.

You were very knowledgeable about every part of the procedure and that is why I chose you over any other surgeon/clinic. Nearly 5 years on and I am very pleased with the results of my operation and have had no problems and they look so natural and have built my confidence so much.

…thank you so much for your fantastic caring and positive attitude.

I decided to have treatment with Mr Banwell due to recommendations from other healthcare professionals and knowledge of his surgical skills. My expectations were for reduced ptosis and fuller breasts, my expectations were exceeded. Mr Banwell provided me with honest and realistic expectations for my clinical outcome. I found it a very positive experience. I was originally very apprehensive about undertaking a cosmetic procedure and questioned the need for proceeding, but following my breast augmentation I have much more self confidence and I realise that I’d underestimated how much the ptosis had been getting to me. The outcome has been fantastic! Thank you.

I am delighted!! Mr Banwell listened to what I wanted and now I have fuller breast that don’t look false!  I would highly recommend him and his team to everyone.  They are all very friendly and the care I received before, during and after was excellent and very professional. Many thanks to you all.
