Lipoma removal

Fatty lumps under the skin are extremely common and can usually be removed fairly easily. In the majority of cases these lumps will grow very slowly and eventually cause an unsightly bulging but sometimes they can be a little uncomfortable too especially  where it may rub an overlying bra strap or catch on a waistband.

Mr Banwell can discuss with you whether the fatty lump (commonly termed a ‘lipoma’) can be removed under a local anaesthetic with you awake or whether you will require a general anaesthetic with you asleep. Rarely a drain may also be required if the lipoma is very large.

Most cases are performed as an outpatient procedure in East Grinstead, Tunbridge Wells, Brighton, Haywards Heath or London Harley Street. Please do let the team know the  most convenient location for you.

BRAS & GARMENTS

This refers simply to the surgical removal (cutting out) of a mole or “lump & bump” on the skin. The resultant wound is usually then put back together with stitches (sutures) but in some cases the lump/mole may be ‘shaved’ off and stitches are not required. There have also been instances of a dermatologist or doctor freezing a mole before removal.

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic (with you awake and the skin numbed by giving an injection with a needle – just like at the dentist). This is a quick and simple procedure with a short recovery period which will be thoroughly explained to you.

The operation itself may take between 15 – 60 minutes, depending upon what is being removed. You will be in the operating theatre for slightly longer than this to prepare for the surgery process and have the injection of the local anaesthetic.

Aftercare following the surgery will see the wound being dressed with brown micropore tape. This can get wet (showering or washing) but you should not soak in the bath. You will be able to shower the day after surgery, after which you can pat the tape dry with a towel then use a hairdryer. It is important to ensure the tape is fully dried. This will stay in place until after your stitches are removed. Mr Banwell may give you antibiotics in some instances.

You will be able to return to sedentary activity (i.e. an office job) the following day, but should avoid strenuous physical activity for a minimum of 2-weeks. Stitches are removed between 1 and 2 weeks after the surgery. If your lump was shaved off then you will just leave the dressing to fall off in time.

You will be able to drive the following day if you are careful. If the operation was on your face or head, it is important not to bend down or lift things for 48-hours after the operation – this is to minimise the risk of bleeding (for example, when doing up shoe laces, bring your foot up whilst sitting down, rather than bending down). It is also a good idea to use a couple of pillows when sleeping to avoid laying flat. This helps minimize swelling and there may be redness and scarring.

This is a safe, reliable and simple procedure with a low complication rate.

These include wound infection, bleeding (usually just bleeding through the dressing), pain, numbness, damage to nerves and vessels, delayed wound healing and the formation of a lumpy scar (known as a hypertrophic or keloid scar). A further problem occasionally encountered is “suture spitting” – this refers to the deeper dissolvable stitches coming out of the wound often after several weeks (and rarely months) after the surgery.

From the welcome I got on my first visit to post-op consultations, the team were very friendly. Mr Banwell is undoubtedly the most professional and caring surgeon I could wish for. I have felt completely confident in his expertise, and am thrilled with the results. I would not hesitate – and indeed have – to recommend him to all my friends.

Mr Banwell was highly recommended by a friend of a friend. She was very satisfied with results which I witnessed. I trusted what I heard and what I saw. My meetings with Mr Banwell only reassured me further. Mr Banwell offered additional discussion time pre op & several follow ups post op. His admin team were 100% helpful and efficient. His manner was approachable and accessible. I would not hesitate to recommend his professional expertise, competitive cost and charming manner. At no point did I feel judged, intimidated or overwhelmed. This was an incredibly positive experience, many thanks to Mr Banwell and the rest of the team.

Thank you so much to you and your team for all that you have done for me, it is greatly appreciated.

…total expertise and attention to detail in surgery.

I was made to feel at ease with everything. Nothing was too much, lots of care and thought. Pain was very minimal. Lots of follow up care which was first class. I got exactly what I wanted, I have a lovely new look which I could not achieve on my own. If something is bothering you and you can not get to your goal there is help. I had an excellent experience.

Margaret S.

My expectations were fully met when I went to see Mr Banwell for the first time and he went through very carefully what he would be doing and giving me a realistic prognosis which was what I wanted. He came over as a very thorough and caring person. The skin graft was a complete success and although quite a large area, it is exceptionally neat and gives me no concern. On two further occasions I noticed lumps in other areas, and on getting in touch, appointments were made and Paul removed them immediately, once again very neatly. The after care is also extremely important to me and I have never been disappointed. Luckily I don’t know anybody going through the same thing as me but I would have no reservations in telling them to go and see Paul, as his thoughtfulness and care and attention throughout is excellent, he treats you as an individual. I would also say that I consider him now to be a friend as well as a surgeon. Whenever I am on the phone making future appointments his staff are always friendly, helpful, cheerful and willing to chat, but if you need any reassurance at any time they’re there for you.
