Your guide to breast implants vs breast fat transfer

What is breast augmentation or breast implant surgery?

A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that can help to increase volume and size, enhance breast shape and improve the symmetry of your breasts.

The breast implant procedure typically uses silicone implants or saline implants to achieve a natural feel and look to the breasts.

Mr Banwell uses Motiva breast implants. They are an advanced silicone implant that uses a highly adaptive gel that reacts to gravity and the movements of your body.

Motiva breast implants also create a more natural result, have a strong reputation for safety, and come with less risk of complications such as capsular contracture or implant rupture.

It is one of the most popular breast procedures performed by Mr Banwell and other aesthetic plastic surgeons in the UK.

Women choose breast augmentation surgery to:

  •       Restore volume loss after pregnancy or weight loss
  •       Provide more symmetry to the breasts
  •       Achieve firmer and filler breasts
  •       Get a more proportionate silhouette

How does breast enlargement surgery work?

During breast enlargement or breast implant surgery, your plastic surgeon will create a breast pocket where they can safely and securely place the breast implant in.

Depending on your existing breast tissue, body type and desired results, they may insert the breast implants:

  •       Partially under the chest muscle (submuscular)
  •       Beneath the natural breast tissue (subglandular)
  •       Completely under the muscle (submuscular)

Breast implant surgery can create a significant increase in breast size. For most women this is often one or more cups.

During your consultation, Mr Banwell will show you different sizes and shapes of breast implants, so that he can tailor your breast augmentation procedure to your needs and goals.

Aftercare and healing process

Breast augmentation recovery can look different for each person, as the body will respond and heal in its own unique way.

Breast implant surgery recovery typically involves:

  •       Wearing a surgical bra or support bra for 8 weeks
  •       Avoiding any strenuous activity for up to 12 weeks
  •       Managing any pain, swelling and bruising with prescribed medication
  •       Attending follow up appointments 2 weeks, 8 weeks, and six months post-op

Most women can return to light activities, including desk jobs within two weeks.

Breast augmentation results

The results from breast augmentation surgery will look different for every patient. You will typically see:

  •   Fuller and rounder breasts
  •   Firmer-feeling breasts
  •   Improved fullness to the upper breasts

Your final results are usually visible six months after your surgery. This is when the breast tissue relaxes and the implants settle into place.

The results of a breast augmentation procedure can last for 8-16 years. At this point, you may opt for revision surgery or implant replacement.

What is a breast fat transfer?

A breast fat transfer procedure or fat transfer breast augmentation uses your own tissue to naturally enhance the shape and size of your breasts.

The procedure relies on fat grafting or autologous fat transfer. This is a method that uses liposuction to surgically remove body fat from one area of your body.

This fat is then injected into the breasts to give them more volume and shape.

It is often chosen by women who want a more natural look and feel, and that also want to avoid any foreign materials in their body. It allows for a more subtle increase in volume, while also improving the body contours.

PureGraft approach to breast fat transfer

For your breast fat transfer procedure, Mr Banwell uses the advanced PureGraft system, which purifies fat cells before it is added into the breasts.

This meticulous approach to fat graft preparation is where many consider it to be the best for achieving optimal take rates and natural results.

It is important to say that a portion of the injected fat will naturally reabsorb over time. As a result, you may need to do further fat transfer breast augmentation over time.

What happens during a breast fat transfer procedure?

During breast fat transfer surgery, Mr Banwell will:

  1. Use a liposuction cannula to remove excess fat from another area of the body such as the abdomen or thighs.
  2. The fat cells are injected into a PureGraft bag and washed with a solution. This helps to isolate healthy fat cells from blood and other fluids.
  3. He will then re-inject the fat into your breasts to enhance breast size and shape.

Unlike implants which have a more firm structure, using your own tissue can make the results feel more soft and natural.

Aftercare and healing process

Breast fat transfer only requires small incisions. This means minimal scarring or less visible scarring than breast implant surgery.

It also has a quicker recovery period and is less painful. Full recovery can take 4-6 weeks, but most women go back to light activities and desk work in a few days or a week.

During the healing process, you will need to wear a supportive garment on the donor site and avoid putting pressure on the breasts.

Not all of the injected fat will survive. It is normal to see some fat reabsorption. This can mean that your results may appear slightly smaller after full recovery.

Breast fat transfer results

Women who have a breast fat transfer tend to see:

  •   A more natural feel and appearance to the breasts
  •   A more subtle increase in breast size and volume
  •   There is often the dual benefit of body contouring by removing excess fat
  •   Minimal or little scarring

This approach to breast enhancement is suitable for women who have enough excess fat in another area of the body.

It is also beneficial to women who want more subtle changes to their breasts and not a dramatic result.

Breast implants or breast fat transfer – which one should I choose?

The choice between breast implants or fat transfer will depend on various factors. These include your body type, medical history, desired outcome and whether you want a more natural approach to breast surgery.

Breast implants might be best if you want:

  •   A more significant size increase
  •   A more rounded and lifted appearance
  •   More predictable and long-lasting results

It is often the best solution if you have small breasts and little natural breast tissue.

Breast fat transfer might be best if you want:

  •   A natural breast augmentation
  •   A more subtle change and natural look
  •   Avoid foreign materials or implants in the body
  •   One procedure that removes excess fat and increase breast size
