What is Mastopexy

Mastopexy is the plastic surgery procedure for raising sagging breasts (breast ptosis), by changing and modifying the size, contour and elevation of the breasts. It is also known as breast uplift surgery.

In medical terms, it is a surgical operation that cuts and removes excess tissues, overstretched suspensory ligaments, and transposes the nipple-areola complex higher upon the breast hemisphere.

Mastopexy surgery techniques are also applied to reduction mammoplasty, which is the correction of oversized breasts (or breast reduction surgery).

Indications for Mastopexy

The following are the four most common reasons that clients seek mastopexy in London with cosmetic surgeon Paul Banwell:

  • Sagging breasts, which have fallen forward after breast-feeding, menopause or significant weight loss.
  • Post-explantation ptosis, which is the sagging of the inelastic skin envelopes, once emptied of the breast implants.
  • Congenital conditions such as tuberous breast deformity (constricted breast).
  • Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.

Why undergo Mastopexy in London?

Many women undergo one of the many breast surgery procedures in order to enhance their appearance and improve their self-confidence. They turn to breasts uplift surgery,or mastopexy in London to reshape sagging breasts and increase firmness of naturally soft breasts.

Gravity is the most common cause of breast sagging, or ptosis. Here’s how it can impact the breasts of women in different age groups:

  • In a young woman with large breasts the sagging occurs because the volume and weight of the bust is disproportionate to body type, and because of the great elasticity of the thin, young skin envelope of each breast.
  • In middle-aged women, breast ptosis usually is caused by postpartum hormonal changes to the maternal body and because of the inelasticity of the skin envelope that is overstretched during breastfeeding.
  • In post-menopausal women, in addition to gravity, breast ptosis atrophy is aggravated by the inelasticity of overstretched, aged skin.

Surgical Techniques for Mastopexy (breast uplift) in London

Breast uplift techniques are known according to the number of scars they produce. Before your operation, Mr Banwell will help you decide the appropriate surgical technique that will achieve the best degree of breast-lift. The different degrees are:

  • Grade I: Mild breast ptosis or sagging, which involves breast implant augmentation, or with a periareolar skin resection (crescent lift) with or without breast augmentation.
  • Grade II: Moderate ptosis, which involves a circumareolar donut mastopexy technique.
  • Grade III: Severe ptosis, which involves circumvent and horizontal incisions of the Anchor mastopexy.

Anaesthetics for Mastopexy at our London clinic

Mastopexy surgery is performed under local or general anaesthetic, depending on the operation and patient. The full details of the procedure and subsequent recovery period will be thoroughly explained to you at our clinic. Local anaesthetic wears off after a few hours, and general anaesthesia can last for over 24 hours.

How long before daily activities may be resumed?

After-care post removal is an important stage of all procedures and treatment. Once treated, if you have only gone under local anaesthetic, you will be able to return to sedentary activity (eg an office job) a few days after. You should avoid all strenuous activity for a minimum of 2 weeks.

After local anaesthetic you can usually drive the following day if you are careful.

All patients must strictly adhere to any aftercare advice post-treatment, regardless of the individual, in order to minimise risk.

Mr Paul Banwell performed a wider excision for me in April 2008 following a diagnosis of melanoma. The care and support provided by him has been second to none and I would have no hesitation in recommending him. Paul’s approach to surgery and post-surgery is one of honesty and excellence in his field of expertise. I feel safe in his care.

Sarah B.

Thank you so much for doing an amazing job on my breast enlargement.

Louise P.

I decided to have treatment with Mr Banwell due to recommendations from other healthcare professionals and knowledge of his surgical skills. My expectations were for reduced ptosis and fuller breasts, my expectations were exceeded. Mr Banwell provided me with honest and realistic expectations for my clinical outcome. I found it a very positive experience. I was originally very apprehensive about undertaking a cosmetic procedure and questioned the need for proceeding, but following my breast augmentation I have much more self confidence and I realise that I’d underestimated how much the ptosis had been getting to me. The outcome has been fantastic! Thank you.

I can honestly say that having my abdominoplasty with Mr Paul Banwell was a truly incredible experience. All the staff were very friendly and efficient.  The care I received with him was expert, professional and totally honest and I found him to be extremely kind and reassuring. Every step of my procedure was explained clearly and in detail.  The nursing care was second to none and the team looked after me expertly and with dignity.  I have an amazing flat abdomen and my clothes look and feel so much better than before my surgery. My linear scar is flat and neat. Everyone comments on how lovely I look and I have found so much more confidence in myself.  I can highly recommend Paul and his team! With grateful thanks to you all!
