What causes moles?

Moles are small, coloured spots on the skin. Most people have them and they’re usually nothing to worry about unless they change size, shape or colour. Most moles are harmless.

Harmless moles are generally round or oval-shaped, with a smooth edge. Moles can be flat or raised and may feel smooth or rough. Sometimes moles have hair growing from them. Moles are usually darker on brown and black skin.

It’s normal for:

  • babies to be born with moles
  • new moles to appear – especially in children and teenagers
  • moles to fade or disappear as you get older
  • moles to get slightly darker during pregnancy

Why get a mole removed?

Many moles are cosmetically unacceptable, but they may also be a nuisance. They may get cut during shaving, bleed, or get caught on clothing, necklaces or combs. Some moles are ‘beauty spots’, but others may look unattractive or be a source of concern. The same may apply to small birth marks, skin tags, warts, cysts, papillomas and other lumps and bumps on the skin which need removing.

Techniques for removing moles

Moles on the face and neck respond best to removal techniques. Other body areas are more likely to leave a small patch of pale skin when the mole has been removed.

Of course, all moles are examined by Mr Banwell who will identify and diagnose it before removal, and if there is any concern that the moles are not completely benign (harmless growths) then sampling of tissue may be recommended with the pathologist.

In these cases we like to be sure the mole is not possibly cancerous.

Mole shave excision

Doctors know that most moles can be removed simply and quickly without the need to cut the skin or have stitches (otherwise known as shave excision), although sometimes stitches may be required. The expert skin specialist, Mr Paul Banwell, consultant plastic surgeon and skin expert, uses both these methods to remove moles, skin tags and birthmarks.

These small procedures are carried out under a local anaesthetic (with you awake) but sometimes sedation or a general anaesthetic might be preferred.

Mole excision biopsy

Alternatively Mr Banwell may decide to remove the whole mole (this is termed an excision biopsy). In most cases the moles will be sent away to the laboratory for analysis unless the surgical removal is purely for cosmetic reasons.

You are in good hands as Mr Banwell performs hundreds of these procedures every year and was also the founder and head of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Unit (MASCU) in East Grinstead.

Mr Banwell has clinics for mole removal, surgical mole excision and skin tag removal in East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Tunbridge Wells, Worthing, Brighton and London.

Mr Banwell is able to remove hairy moles, unsightly moles, skin tags, warts, warty lesions, keratotic lesions, skin cancers, basal cell carcinomas (BCC), squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and malginant melanomas (MM).

Book your consultation at The Banwell Clinic Tunbridge Wells to discuss the procedure and next steps for mole removal. Please email help@paulebanwell.com or call 01342 330302.

Anaesthetics

Mole removal procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic (with you awake and the skin numbed by giving an injection with a needle – just like at the dentist). This is a quick and simple procedure with a short recovery period which will be thoroughly explained to you.

How long before daily activities may be resumed?

You will be able to return to sedentary activity (ie an office job) the following day, but should avoid strenuous physical activity for a minimum of 2-weeks.

Stitches are removed between 1 and 2 weeks after the surgery. If your lump was shaved off then you will just leave the dressing to fall off in time.

You will be able to drive the following day if you are careful. If the operation was on your face or head, it is important not to bend down or lift things for 48-hours after the operation – this is to minimise the risk of bleeding (for example, when doing up shoe laces, bring your foot up whilst sitting down, rather than bending down).

It is also a good idea to use a couple of pillows when sleeping to avoid laying flat. This helps minimise swelling and there may be redness and scarring.

I was extremely happy with the care I received; all the staff were polite, friendly and caring. I felt totally at ease and everything was very efficient.  I am very happy with the outcome and I would have no hesitation about recommending Mr Banwell. I fact I already have to 2 people! Thank you.

Gemma P.

I decided to have treatment with Mr Banwell due to recommendations from other healthcare professionals and knowledge of his surgical skills. My expectations were for reduced ptosis and fuller breasts, my expectations were exceeded. Mr Banwell provided me with honest and realistic expectations for my clinical outcome. I found it a very positive experience. I was originally very apprehensive about undertaking a cosmetic procedure and questioned the need for proceeding, but following my breast augmentation I have much more self confidence and I realise that I’d underestimated how much the ptosis had been getting to me. The outcome has been fantastic! Thank you.

Sharon B.

I just want to thank you for all your care, expertise and advice.

The team at the McIndoe Surgical Centre who looked after me were very friendly and helpful. They calmed me down and put to rest any last minute concerns. I love the outcome of the surgery and would definitely recommend Mr Banwell to other people.

I felt upon meeting Mr Banwell that I was really comfortable dealing with him. He put me at ease with his friendly and professional approach. My overall experience was excellent, I can’t praise it enough. Mr Banwell was so patient with all my questions, he explained everything clearly, he is so friendly as well as professional and his admin team back up his service perfectly. You all turned a daunting experience in to a breeze. I would recommend you to everyone.

Felicity C.

I thought the team were helpful and efficient because they helped me to schedule my appointments around my working hours. They were always at hand to discuss any questions I had with a friendly and professional manor. Mr Banwell was amazing. He was totally honest and helped me decide which type of breast implant and procedure to have. We talked through my torrent of questions and concerns with ease. He asked me how I wanted my breast to look and I said I wanted them as natural as possible and that is exactly what I got. My new breasts have certainly made me feel more confident with ym body. I previously felt inadequate in the breast area and now I can?t stop smiling! I am so pleased with the outcome I only wish I?d done it sooner. The operation certainly wasn?t as scary as I thought it would be and I was looked after with the utmost care.
