How can I get my tattoo removed?

With an increasing popularity in tattoos comes an increasing interest in tattoo removal as people change their minds or grow out of love with the ink they once desired. It’s estimated based on statistics that 20 million people in the UK have some form of body art. That’s a lot of tattoos… and a lot of tattoo removal!

In many cases laser tattoo removal is not always successful and so patients seek out Mr Banwell’s expertise for definitive surgical removal. Tattoo removal by surgical excision means removing the tattoo by cutting it out of the skin. The wound is treated with stitches, which in turn replaces the tattoo with a linear scar. This procedure for tattoo removal is available at Mr Banwell’s clinic in Brighton.

What happens during surgical tattoo removal at our Brighton clinic?

The surgical removal procedure at our Brighton clinic will usually be performed under a local anaesthetic; the patient remains awake and only the area to be operated on will be numbed sufficiently. On occasion a general anaesthetic may need to be given where more extensive work is required.

The surgical tattoo removal procedure is usually quick (completed between 30-60 minutes in a lot of cases) and with a short recovery time. For larger or more intricate tattoo removals, the patient may require several sessions of tattoo excision.

What happens after treatment?

After the surgical procedure to remove your tattoo, the area of skin will be stitched up and dressed with micropore tape. You will be able to shower the day after your procedure; however you should avoid taking baths or soaking the wound for any extended periods.

Strenuous physical exercise should be avoided for a period of two weeks. Mr Banwell may also prescribe antibiotic medication for aftercare recovery. Dissolvable stitches are preferred, but if the patient has non-dissolving stitches these will usually be removed after 1-2 weeks.

How successful is removing tattoos?

Surgical tattoo removal at The Banwell Clinic in Brighton is very successful and Mr Banwell has received high praise for the results of his work. The tattoo removal procedure is safe and reliable with a low complication rate. Examples of Mr Banwell’s surgical tattoo removals can be viewed in the before and after gallery

What are the risks?

All potential risks will be discussed with each patient in a pre-treatment consultation. Although surgical tattoo removal is a safe and proven procedure, as with any surgical treatment there may be risks and complications.

These could include bleeding, adverse scarring, wound infection, numbness, nerve and vessel damage, contour irregularity and lumpy scarring (known as hypertrophic or keloid scar).

I am so happy with the results of my surgery.

I was delighted with my care, it was faultless in all aspects.

I decided to have treatment with Mr Banwell as I had been seeing him on several occasions regarding stomach irregularities due to a disastrous lipo operation abroad a few years ago. We discussed various options together and I always felt comfortable talking with Mr Banwell and trust him completely to give me the correct advice when considering surgery. I felt my expectations were realistic as Mr Banwell had advised me of the possible downside of the procedure. However, all my expectations were exceeded tenfold! My stomach is looking so much better aesthetically and my breasts look amazing! Mr Banwell and his team excelled at making me feel comfortable and relaxed. I felt I was able to discuss matters with friendly people who cared. I feel Mr Banwell takes time to cover all aspects of the procedure in a friendly, caring and informative manner. I feel happy to say one couldn’t be in safer hands. My overall experience with Mr Banwell and his team has been very positive in all aspects culminating in amazing results. I couldn’t be happier.

I was made to feel at ease with everything. Nothing was too much, lots of care and thought. Pain was very minimal. Lots of follow up care which was first class. I got exactly what I wanted, I have a lovely new look which I could not achieve on my own. If something is bothering you and you can not get to your goal there is help. I had an excellent experience.

Dear Mr Banwell I am writing to thank you, Kim and the rest of the lovely staff at the McIndoe. I was very nervous when I first met you, about having surgery but realised that it was a necessary evil. I need not have been worried, as from our initial consultation to surgery to full recovery, you have all been amazing.  You have changed my life – for the first time ever I have had some photos taken of me and my children. I stand taller and feel so much happier with life. I have even started my own business. I never realised that it would have had such a profound effect – and it didn’t hurt!! Thank you again.  I wish you and your team lots of health, luck and happiness.

I went to see Mr Banwell to get reassurance about the moles and blemishes which have been steadily growing since I was a young adult. 30 years ago we were not aware of the dangers of the sun and burning on holiday way an annual ritual. Thankfully we are all now aware that the sun damage can cause skin cancer and the changes in my moles mean I have a precautionary approach, particularly as older family members have had tumours removed. Paul knows exactly what he was looking for and studied each and every mole methodically. The two he highlighted for treatment were two of the least innocuous (in my opinion) which surprised me. Clearly to the trained eye they needed removal. I have since had an excision of one and due to have photo dynamic therapy treatment for the small red mark on my nose later this year. Without seeing Paul, this minor irritation would have been left and could possibly have created problems later in life. I advocate regular checks for anyone with moles and skin blemishes. The technology now is so impressive and it makes absolutely sense to take full advantage of Paul’s expertise.
